New report: U.S. potato chips market holds steady amid modest growth outlook

IndexBox has unveiled its latest United States Potato Chips Market report, estimating that the U.S. potato chips market will register only modest growth over the coming decade. The report—released August 17, 2025—projects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of +0.1% in volume and +0.3% in nominal value from 2024 through 2035, culminating in a market poised to reach approximately 2.9 million metric tons and $10.3 billion by 2035.

Key Findings from the 2024 Base Year

  • Consumption in 2024 held steady at 2.9 million tons—virtually unchanged from 2023—with an average annual increase of +1.7% from 2013 to 2024. Volume peaked in 2021 before plateauing.
  • Market value edged up to $9.9 billion in 2024, representing a 1.6% year‑on‑year gain and a +2.1% average annual rise since 2013.
  • Production mirrored consumption trends: approximately 2.9 million tons produced in 2024, unchanged year‑over‑year yet up from 2013, with output value also reaching $9.9 billion.
  • Imports climbed to 80,000 tons in 2024, up 2.4% from 2023, marking an average annual surge of +5.2% over the prior eleven years. Total import value in 2024 reached $423 million.

Canada led as the dominant supplier—contributing 52,000 tons (66% of volume) or $276 million (65% of value)—followed by Mexico (16 K t; $101 M) and China (3.5 K t). Meanwhile, the average import price climbed 5.5% to $5,286 per ton in 2024.

  • Exports dipped slightly to 105,000 tons in 2024 (–2.8% YoY), following years of growth. Export value, however, rose: shipments were valued at $363 million, marking a record high. Canada remained the top destination (50 K t; $159 M), followed by Mexico (24 K t; $62 M) and the United Arab Emirates (5.3 K t). Average export prices reached $3,456 per ton—up 3.4% from the previous year; the UAE commanded the highest prices ($5,056/t), while Mexico posted among the lowest ($2,631/t).
