McCain Foods has announced its agreement to acquire Penobscot McCrum, a family-owned specialty potato processor in Maine, according to a news story by Cameron Levasseur, published by Bangor Daily News here.
The deal focuses on Penobscot McCrum’s state-of-the-art Washburn processing plant, a 115,000-square-foot facility opened in 2020 on the site of a former potato factory. This plant, valued at over $32 million, employs approximately 130 people and specializes in premium frozen potato products such as skins, pancakes, and other value-added items made from locally grown potatoes.
While the processing operations will transfer to McCain, the McCrum family’s farming business will remain independent and enter a long-term potato supply agreement with the acquirer. This acquisition enhances McCain’s North American presence, integrating with its existing large-scale plant in nearby Easton, which employs over 500 people.
Executives from both companies emphasized shared values. Howard Snape, McCain’s North American regional president, noted the commitment to integrity, sustainability, and quality, stating the transition will be seamless for employees and farmers. Jay McCrum, Owner and CEO, described it as a natural progression of their partnership, confident in McCain’s ability to uphold the family legacy.
